Arlington Xarelto Lawsuit Lawyer
Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is a newer class blood thinning drug that has been linked to thousands of injuries and deaths since it was approved in 2011. Numerous lawsuits have already been filed against the makers of Xarelto, and more are being filed by the day. Anyone who has experienced a bleeding injury while taking Xarelto should contact a licensed attorney as soon as possible to protect your legal rights.
The Dangers of Xarelto
Xarelto is a blood thinner or anticoagulant drug used to treat blood clots, pulmonary embolisms, and deep vein thrombosis. It has been sold by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, and Bayer HealthCare since 2011.
Xarelto is only the second drug to be approved by the FDA as a new generation of blood thinners that are marketed as alternatives to the drug Warfarin. Warfarin has been the main anticoagulant available since the 1950’s. The drug comes with numerous dietary restrictions and requires frequent dosage adjustments. Unlike Warfarin, Xarelto offers an easy to use pill taken either once or twice a day.
When Xarelto came onto the market in 2011, it had no reversal agent. This meant that when internal bleeding started, it could virtually not be stopped. Though medical experts now believe they may have discovered a reversal agent, this comes too late for many patients. In comparison, Warfarin could be reversed with high doses of Vitamin K.
In the event of a surgery, traumatic accident, or cerebral hemorrhage, doctors struggle to stop the bleeding in many Xarelto patients. Studies show that Xarelto is linked to uncontrollable bleeding in severely ill patients. Lawsuits lodged against Bayer and Janssen claim that the drug makers negligently failed to disclose the full extent of the bleeding risk associated with the drug.
Xarelto Multi-District Litigation (MDL)
In December of 2014, a panel of federal judges elected to centralize dozens of Xarelto lawsuits into Multi-District Litigation (MDL) in the United States District for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Soon, over 80 lawsuits were transferred to the litigation.
Unlike a class action, the MDL process can reduce costs, improve efficiency, and help a large number of people with similar claims. It differs from a class action in that each plaintiff has his or her own attorney and the lawsuits are independent, meaning that each case will have its own outcome and unique damages analysis.
