Exposure to electricity can result in very serious injuries including severe burns, brain damage and even death. The higher the voltage, the more likely the severity of injury will increase. Many construction sites and workplaces require high voltage electricity to run the machines, cranes and equipment. This often results in severe workplace injuries due to the high voltage necessary to run the work site.
Electrical accidents are one of the leading causes of workplace fatalities, whether it is in construction, manufacturing or mining. The mining industry is rife with injuries and accidents, with electrical accidents reported as the leading cause of all mining fatalities. They accounted for over 6% of workplace deaths between 2000 and 2009 according the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In comparison to other industries, mining is among the most dangerous when it comes to electrical injuries. In fact, the Mine Safety and Health Administration recorded one electrical fatality for every 22 electrical-related injuries that occurred from 2000 to 2009 while other industries averaged one fatality for every 203 injuries.
Power Line Safety Tips
You can be seriously injured or electrocuted if you come into contact with power lines. If you should encounter a downed power line, heeding the following tips may keep you safe.
- If you see a downed power line, move away from the line and anything touching it. Take small steps and shuffle away: by taking small steps and keeping your feet together and on the ground at all times minimizes the chance that the electric current will find a path through your body.
- Never touch a person if they are in direct or indirect contact with a downed line. Call 911 and wait for trained personnel to arrive.
- Never try to move a downed power line or anything in contact with a downed line by using another object such as a branch, a stick or a broom.
- Never drive over downed lines.
- Do not attempt to get out of your car if it is in contact with a downed line. Stay where you are. Honk the horn and ask for help if you can (be sure to tell others to stay away from the car though). Call 911 if you have a cell phone or ask someone to call for you.
