If you suffer from a burn injury, one of the first things that you’re going to hear throwing around the medical treatment is a classification of your burns. Most people are familiar with a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th degree burn. They have at least heard those terms. Most doctors now use the terms either superficial, partial thickness or full thickness. A superficial burn would be like sunburn. A 2nd degree burn involves the 1st and 2nd layers of skin and it will often result in blistering and severe pain and swelling to the areas. A full thickness burn will go through all the layers of the skin and may even involve the underlying tissues like the fat, the muscle and the bone. A full thickness burn often times because it burns all the way through the nerves the area of the burn itself may not hurt. Now the outer areas that weren’t as deeply burned will still hurt, maybe you have a 2nd degree burn. The doctors will classify the percentage of the body burned, and so you will hear people say things like they suffered a burn to 25% of their body. The doctors have charts that they use to come up with these and they will tell you what percentage is 2nd and 3rd degree burns. This isn’t an exact science but the point is to get an overall idea of the affect that the burn had on the body and how much of the body systems were affected.
