The First 48 Hours after a Car Accident

The First 48 Hours after a Car Accident

Our personal injury attorneys at Zinda Law Group receive a lot of potential calls from clients that have been in car accidents recently. Most often they'll ask us questions about things they could've done or should've done in the 24 to 48 hours after the wreck happened. While they can't rewind and go back and do some of these things, I wanted to make sure I let people know some of the things that our attorneys see that I would change if we were able to rewind it back. First of all, don't feel like you have to make any sort of statement to an insurance company. What they want to do is take your statement and the words that you give them and use those against you later. These insurance companies aren't in the business of paying money to people, they are in the business of saving it. So make sure you have an attorney there to protect your rights and tell you what you do need to do and don't need to do so you're in the best position later. Secondly, you may want to take pictures of your vehicle. While the insurance companies may end up taking pictures of your vehicle and providing them to you later; it's always good to have a record of the damage that was done. Also, you may want to call an attorney about how to handle the property damage portion of your claim. What you have to remember is that in a car accident there are two separate and distinguished claims that you can make. There is a Bodily Injury Claim as well a Property Damage Claim, and they don't have to be settled at the same time. So make sure that you call an attorney and realize what your rights are on each claim once you get into a car accident. Lastly, people need to know about all the different types of insurance coverage they have to their own car insurance company. Sometimes there are coverages that can help you out in a situation where the responsible party isn't taking responsibility as they should or if you have medical bills that are piling up and are waiting for a settlement in the meantime.
