What to Do After a Car Accident

What to Do After a Car Accident

Three key things that you can do following a car accident to ensure that you’re the most protected you can be.

The first thing is: don't admit fault. Don't get into lengthy conversations about what happened out there. Don't give statements to insurance investigators or the family members of the other motorist. You’ve got to cooperate with the police of course and give the information necessary to the other driver about your insurance and your contact information. You just don't want to get into detailed conversations about what happened and when it happened and the order of events before the accident.

The next thing is: you’ve got to get medical help. If you've been injured, it's very important that you see a doctor. Cooperate with those doctors; get any follow-up care they recommend. It's important to your claim to demonstrate that you've made a good faith effort to recover and address those issues as quickly as possible.

Then, the next thing you want to do is gather any evidence. You want to do that as soon as possible. It's really easy for that evidence to be destroyed; possibly rain or traffic coming by can get rid of it pretty quickly. Take photos of the scene. Take photos of the vehicles. Get contact information, identification information for any eye witnesses. A lot of people assume that the police officers are going to take down the names of any witnesses but it often doesn't happen. So that can be key evidence on your case so it's important that you collect it.
