Handling a Dog Bite Claim

Last updated on: July 10, 2015

When you’re involved in a dog bite it can be extremely traumatic but there are some things that you want to make sure to keep in mind.

First, you need to contact your local animal control or police department. Make sure that they are going to come out. They’ll do a report. That will help because it will document that the incident occurred, but it will also collect the information about who owns the dog, who’s responsible for it, and will give you an avenue to find out vaccination information. Make sure that that dog has had its rabies vaccination and things along that line so that you can make sure that your health is taken care of.

Then, along the health line, you want to get medical help. It’s very, very important. Dog’s mouths, in particular, have all sorts of bacteria and germs inside of them, and they can cause infection extremely easily, so make sure to go to the hospital, get checked out, make sure that your wound is treated and taken care of appropriately.

The next thing you want to make sure to take care of is documentation. That means collecting some sort of evidence of what happened. You want to take photos, at least every day, of your bite, and your injuries, and make sure that you’re documenting those regularly, as I mentioned every day, so that the healing progress can be shown to a jury in your case.

The next thing you want to do is collect the names, phone numbers, and addresses of any witnesses. You want to make sure that you can find those people when you need to talk to them so get as much information as they’re willing to share and make sure that you feel comfortable that you’ll be able to locate those folks when you need them to back up your story.
