What to Do After a Dog Bite

Last updated on: March 9, 2015

Dog bite incidents can be very traumatic for the person involved and a lot of times people forget the small steps that they can take to make sure that if they do need to pursue a case, or a lawsuit, against the owner of the dog, they can make sure that they do that effectively. The first thing you want to do is, really serves two purposes. You want to contact the police or the animal control because you want to make sure that your health is protected, and you also want to document the incident. When they come out there, they will check for the dog’s vaccination records. They can do a rabies quarantine, things like that to make sure that your health is considered, as well as the health of the other people around you that could be affected by that dog. The other thing they’re going to do is they’re going to document the incident. That’s going to be key evidence in your case to show that the incident did actually occur, what happened, and who owned the dog. The next thing you want to do is, make sure you get medical help. Sometimes that’s going to be the very first thing you do. I can’t overstate how important that is. Dog bites can cause very significant infections and a lot of people who have serious problems as a result of a dog bite, where there wasn’t a severe tearing of flesh or something along those lines are because it’s not treated appropriately and they do get it infected. The next thing you want to do is you want to document the incident. You want to take photos of your injuries. You want to do that from the day it happens. You want to take them every single day so you can document the healing process. You also want to get the names, phone numbers, addresses and any other contact information you can for any eye witnesses. If you can get their date of birth, their driver’s license number, anything you can think of that is going to keep them from disappearing or you losing touch. Now, if they’re your next door neighbor, that’s probably pretty easy, a name and phone number is probably sufficient. You just want to make sure that you can find those people when they’re needed.
