Drug Injury

Drug Injury in Bryan/College Station

More people die from drug injuries in the United States than from auto accidents. Whether these deaths or injuries occur due to medical mistake, over-prescribing of drugs, pharmacy error, complications related or over the counter medications, you may be entitled to receive compensation for your injuries.

Medical Mistakes

The Institute of Medicine reports that medication errors account for 10% of all medical errors that occur with a full 70% of those mistakes believed to be preventable. Because doctors prescribe more and more drugs, the rate of increase in drug related deaths has increased exponentially. According to the Food and Drug Administration 82,724 deaths were attributed to drug injuries from FDA approved drugs in 2010 alone. In addition, there were more than 471,000 serious injuries that same year. These serious injuries are noted as life-threatening and requiring hospitalization and they often result in serious disability, congenital anomaly or other life-altering outcomes.

Nearly 100,000 people are given the wrong medications every year that result in injury or death as a result of medical errors. Some of the most common errors include receiving the wrong drugs or improper dosages, receiving the wrong dosage or somebody's prescribed medication rather than your own, dangerous drug interactions, or failure on the part of the doctor or medical staff to fail to check medical history for known drug allergies.

Other Drug Injuries

Drug related injury and death rates have increased dramatically in the United States. Other types of drug injuries result from over-prescribing of drugs, drug manufacturer error, pharmacy error, or over the counter drugs injuries and complications.

Doctors are more willing to prescribe pain medications and opiates but that has resulted in an increase in drug overdose rates. In fact, prescription drugs deaths have tripled in the United States since 1990 as a result. Patients rely upon their physicians to advise them of the risks related to any drugs prescribed, but quite often the doctors fail to inform their patients of the risks, side effects or life-threatening complications that can occur.

Nearly 83,000 deaths and 471,000 injuries are suffered every year from FDA approved drugs. It can be said that the FDA plays a major role in the increase in death rates due to drug injuries from the drugs that they approve. Many drugs are on the market haven't been adequately studied, and often have serious side effects, including death.

Medication errors that occur in the pharmacy are also a major area of concern for drug injuries. These errors can result from being given the wrong medication, unacknowledged side effects, possible drug interactions, improperly filled dosages, and drug name mix-ups.

Lastly, over the counter drugs injure and kill people every year too. Every year, there are over 76,000 Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAIDS) related hospitalizations every year, with more than 7,600 resulting in death. In addition, Acetaminophen related liver injuries account for more than 56,000 emergency room visits each year, plus 26,000 hospitalizations.
