While riding a motorcycle may be exhilarating and an enjoyable hobby for many, motorcycle riders face certain dangers that other drivers may not experience. For starters, motorcycle riders can be at risk for more serious injuries when involved in car accidents because they have less protection than when they are driving a car.
Even motorcyclists with years of experience are vulnerable on the road, at risk of being in an accident if other drivers are not paying attention. If you were involved in a motorcycle accident and need an accident law firm, our car accident attorneys may be able to assist you.
If you or a loved one has been in a motorcycle accident, call our Colorado Springs motorcycle accident attorneys at Zinda Law Group at (800) 863-5312 for a 100% free case evaluation. Some of our car accident attorneys speak Spanish as well, in order to better assist you.
how do motorcycle accidents happen?
Motorcycle accidents can happen if other drivers on the road are not paying attention and do not see the rider beside them. Colorado’s Department of Transportation (CDOT) reminds drivers to be more aware of motorcycles and to always look twice to prevent accidents with motorcyclists.
Despite the motorcyclist riding safely and taking precautions such as wearing proper gear, other drivers on the road can pose a danger and put riders at risk. This is why motorcyclists should always wear a helmet and reflective clothing to make themselves more visible. However, despite these efforts, motorcyclists are still at risk of serious injuries in an accident.
In order to keep motorcycle riders and everyone else on the road safe, it is important to share the road and to be alert of other drivers and riders around you. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcyclists are about 27 times more likely to die in a traffic crash than a car passenger. In 2020, there were 100 motorcycle fatalities in Colorado.
Making Turns or Changing Lanes
Drivers must share the road with motorcyclists and should always look out for them. When making turns, especially left turns, automobile drivers should look carefully for motorcycle riders before turning. Before changing lanes, drivers should always check their blind spot to make sure there is not a rider next to them. Never follow too closely behind a motorcyclist.
Be sure to check twice to see if there is a motorcyclist near you before you turn, merge, or make a lane change. Motorcyclists should also be wary of lingering in a car’s blind spot for too long.
Avoid Driving or Riding Distracted
Drivers and motorcyclists should avoid distractions while on the road. Distractions may include talking on the phone or even listening to music, especially while on a motorcycle. Riders need to be more alert of other drivers around them while they are riding, so it may be useful to avoid using headphones so that traffic sounds can be heard.
While it may be thrilling to exceed the speed limit on a motorcycle, speeding can cause accidents to happen. Motorcycles are smaller than cars and can easily be lost in blind spots; indeed, they are difficult to spot in general. Speeding increases the risk that another driver will not see a motorcyclist until it is too late.
Avoid Unsafe Riding
Motorcycle accidents may also occur if the motorcyclist is not experienced enough to ride. Colorado law requires a valid Colorado driver’s license and a motorcycle endorsement in order to ride legally. To obtain a motorcycle endorsement, the rider may choose one of two options:
1. Pass a written motorcycle exam, purchase a motorcycle instruction permit, pass a skills test, and purchase a new driver license to add the motorcycle endorsement.
2. Complete a Motorcycle Operator Safety Training (MOST) course and present your MOST waiver to purchase a new driver license to add the motorcycle endorsement.
Riders should be aware of and follow all traffic laws at all times. Passing a vehicle within the same lane or “splitting” lanes, going in between two lanes of traffic to pass, is illegal in Colorado. Motorcycles may share a lane or “co-ride” with one other motorcycle.

what kind of injuries can occur?
Motorcycle accidents can cause devastating injuries and even death. Many of these tragic consequences occur because motorcyclists do not have the same protective devices that are present within a car. Aside from the protection given by the actual car, automobiles are equipped with air bags, seat belts, and other safety mechanisms to keep passengers safe in a car accident. Most motorcycles do not have any of these.
Head injuries are common in motorcycle accidents, even when helmets are worn. A concussion or neck injury can still occur even when wearing a properly fitting helmet that is approved for use. Colorado law does not require riders 18 and over to wear a helmet, but it is in your best interest to wear one to protect yourself. Riders under the age of 18 are required to wear a helmet that is DOT-approved.
Eye protection is required in Colorado for all riders and passengers and can prevent eye injuries. Eye protection can come from a visor or a helmet, but riders can also choose to wear goggles or eyeglasses. A windshield is not considered eye protection.
Even with protective clothing such as jackets, pants, boots, and gloves, riders are still at risk for significant injuries. These can include road rash, scrapes, and bruising. Thick clothing made with material such as leather or denim are meant to protect the rider if they fall and slide across the road. If the motorcyclist was traveling fast when they were hit, a long slide on the pavement can shred through layers of clothing and severely injure the skin.
Internal injuries such as broken bones may occur in a motorcycle accident, and there is not much preventative action a rider can take to avoid them. Being exposed on a motorcycle leaves the rider vulnerable for very damaging internal injuries. Protective clothing will not prevent breaking limbs, fingers, or ribs when the rider hits the ground, a concrete road barrier, or another car in an accident.
what should you do after a motorcycle accident?
If you have been in a motorcycle accident, you should act quickly to prevent further harm. Being exposed on the highway puts you at risk for another accident. If you are involved in a motorcycle accident, consider the following tips to prevent further injury:
Get to Safety
It is important to get to safety as soon as possible. Get yourself out of the way of traffic and onto the shoulder or sidewalk. If possible, move your motorcycle out of traffic. If you do not, you may be difficult for oncoming traffic to see and avoid, especially if it is a busy road.
Call for Help
Call 911 and get the police to come to the scene of the accident as soon as possible. If you are too injured to call 911, you should instruct someone else at the scene to call for you. Stay on the phone with dispatchers until help arrives.
Do Not Remove Your Gear
Do not remove your helmet, if you are wearing one. You helmet is still protecting your head and spine from further injury and you should wait until paramedics remove it for you. Your protective gear such as helmet, jacket, or gloves should also be reflective, increasing your visibility so that other drivers can see you and avoid another collision.
Find a Motorcycle Accident Lawyer Near You
Contact a motorcycle accident attorney in Colorado Springs as soon as possible. A motorcycle accident can give rise to a personal injury claim. In Colorado, you have two years from the date of the accident to file a claim for personal injury or three years to file if the injury was caused by a motor vehicle.
What kind of compensation is possible?
Compensation for a personal injury claim is referred to as “damages.” If you were injured by someone else, you may be able to recover financially for the harm you have suffered.
These damages may include your medical expenses, including any surgeries, physical rehabilitation, or follow-up care you receive. The cost of medical care such as assistive devices like wheelchairs or prescription medications may also be recoverable. If you experienced lost earnings as a result of missing work due to the accident, these may be recoverable as well.
Being involved in a motorcycle accident can pose more serious injuries than if you were a passenger in a car. You may be able to recover for quality-of-life expenses and damages that are long-lasting. This can include pain and suffering in dealing with the injuries, mental anguish, loss of ability to enjoy life, or permanent disabilities.
