How to get a crash report in Austin

Car accidents are extremely common in Austin, and they can be very costly in terms of injuries and property damage. If you were involved in an car accident, caused by another driver, you will likely be filing a claim with the insurance company. The first key step for them is to determine who is at fault and to accept liability. This is most easily done by reviewing the official crash report done by an officer at the scene. The insurance company will reach out to you to obtain this document.

Austin Crash Report

In Austin, crash reports are not available on the Austin Police Department Incident Report Database. You may purchase a copy of your report from the police headquarters, located at 715 E 8th Street. This can be done in person or by mail.

If you choose to go in person, the Report Sales division is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays. To obtain your copy in person, you will need the case number. You may call Austin Police Department Report Sales at 512-974-5407 to see if the report is ready before you going to APD.

To get your copy by mail, you will need to send a pre-addressed, stamped envelope containing $6. Payment is accepted as cash, check or money order. You will then mail it to the Austin Police Department Report Sales P.O. Box 689001, Austin, Texas 78768.

Insurance companies base most of their decision for liability on the crash report because it should be the most accurate description of what happened. The officer will include vital details such as who is at fault, where and when it took place, parties involved, events occurring immediately after the collision, and apparent injuries. Without providing this report, recovering damages will be much more challenging and take much longer.
