Dallas Bicyclists Show Numbers at City Hall
Today, about 100 local bicycle riders rode to City Hall in order to try and influence legislation about bicycle paths in the city. This is the second annual Bike to City Hall event, and even three city council members participated in the ride. The proposed bikeway system will be one of the best in the country, and it will both encourage new riders and help ensure the safety of all bike riders.
Bike riding has become increasingly popular as the economy has dipped and gas prices have soared. It is an inexpensive, environmentally-friendly way to get around town. Unfortunately, without proper bike routes, however, it can also be dangerous.
Each year, around 50,000 bicyclists are injured in traffic accidents. They account for more than 14% of fatalities of people who are not in vehicles. As riders, they have less protection against crashes and are thus usually hurt more severely. The average age of cyclists in fatal accidents was 41.
Many people believe that if the streets were more accommodating, fewer bicycle accidents would occur. The bicycle legislation will be reviewed again in December and decided upon in the spring.
