Drunk Driving & Traffic Fatalities Lead To New Initiatives

According to multiple reports, Texas has the second most drunk driving arrests out of all fifty U.S. states. When individuals make the decision to get behind the wheel despite intoxication, they oftentimes risk their lives and the lives of others as well. While not all accidents that result in deaths involve drunk drivers, Austin police have recently announced new ways they are attempting to curb trafficfatalities, according to the Austin American-Statesman.

As a result of the spike in recent traffic fatalities in the area, the police department is implementing "Operation Summer Days" to make a point of protecting individuals on the weekends and those in high-risk parts of town. Furthermore, they're going to begin a pedestrian safety plan that involves increased awareness and education regarding pedestrian safety.

Between 2000-2009 between 43%-49% of all Texas roadway fatalities involved intoxicated drivers. The evidence of the dangers drunk driving presents are extremely clear. However, by spreading awareness of this increasing problem, Austin police hope to reduce fatalities in our precious state.
