Implant Complications
Two years ago, nearly 300,000 women underwent surgery to receive transvaginal mesh implants. Today, 10% of those women are experiencing medical complications. Although mesh implants were designed to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP), many women experience painful side effects that far outweigh the benefits of the operation. For instance, mesh implants have been known to cause erosion. If the device becomes exposed, women may suffer severe pain. Sometimes the mesh shrinks and contracts, causing pain during sexual intercourse or the inability to have sexual intercourse. Defective mesh implants have been known to cause bleeding, vaginal scaring, urinary tract infections and repeated need for surgery.
