A much-publicized case draws to an end this month in California.
The case involved a 36-year-old man that was beaten to death by several police officers. The incident, which happened over 11 years ago, is finally seeing its day in court. According to the prosecution, the man was beaten by police during a drug raid on March 23, 2000, causing him to break several ribs and other injuries. He died shortly after of pneumonia caused by the injuries sustained during that beating.
Even though there was no mention of physical force being used against the man at that time, the family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city in 2009. After hearing the evidence against the city's officers, the City Council voted last week to the settlement proposed by the victim's family. Of this evidence was the fact that the police officers who were involved in the beating had met before being interviewed by Internal Affairs to synchronize their stories.
