Transvaginal Mesh is a surgical mesh or medical device used to repair weakened vaginal walls or to support the urethra in order to address stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Weakened vaginal walls are also known as pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and transvaginal mesh was designed as a device that would shore up weakened walls and repair damaged tissue. It is permanently implanted by a doctor during surgery but many who have undergone the surgery have experienced serious health problems.

In 2011, the FDA announced, “There are clear risks associated with the transvaginal placement of mesh to treat POP.” William Maisel, M.D., M.P.H., deputy director for the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, went on to say, “The FDA is asking surgeons to carefully consider all other treatment options and to make sure that their patients are fully informed of potential complications from surgical mesh. Mesh is a permanent implant—complete removal may not be possible and may not result in complete resolution of complications.”

While many physicians considered this strong warning coming from the FDA to be more than enough to prevent them from continuing to use transvaginal mesh, other healthcare professionals continued to use it. Since it is a non-reversible procedure, patients who do experience numerous health care issues have no effective solution to address the various complaints.  Some of the complications include:

  • Urinary problems
  • Erosion through vaginal epithelium
  • Pain
  • Infection
  • Bowel, bladder, and blood vessel perforation during insertion

Many patients have experienced a significant decrease in quality of life because of these complications. Some have experienced pain during normal activities and while having sex. Transvaginal mesh complications are often ongoing, meaning that the patient will have to live with these painful symptoms for the rest of their life.
