In San Francisco, a fire truck was blocked by a Cruise autonomous car while trying to respond to a fire. Authorities reported that there was no human driver in the vehicle who could otherwise move the self-driving car out of the way, allowing the fire truck to access the emergency. This is one of many challenges municipalities and autonomous car makers face in allowing self-driving vehicles to become a mainstream form of transportation.
“This incident slowed SFFD response to a fire that resulted in property damage and personal injuries,” city officials wrote in a filing submitted to the California Public Utilities Commission.
The fire department, as well as other city services, are concerned about the possibility of this incident happening again in the future.
