Tips on Staying Safe this July 4th Weekend

The weekend of July 4th traditionally is traditionally a time of a great increase in the number of car accidents and injuries due to motor vehicle collisions. In fact, last year alone there were 44 fatalities on the weekend of the 4th. This holiday weekend, it’s important to know what you can do to keep you and your family safe.

First, if you have to be out on the road, drive defensively.  The weekend surrounding July 4th perennially sees an increase in alcohol-related wrecks. The best strategy for being on the road is one where you are vigilante for other drivers who might not be as careful as you.  If someone is acting strangely on the road around you, get away from them as quickly as possible.

Second, make sure you have the right coverage in case you get in a wreck that’s not your fault. Two types of coverage that are great to have are Personal Injury Protection and Underinsured Motorist Coverage.  Personal Injury Protection is “no-fault” coverage that reimburses you for your medical bills as soon as you present them, no matter who caused your accident. Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage will compensate you for your injuries even if the person who caused you accident was not carrying valid insurance when they caused the collision. These two types of coverage insured that your health and your family’s health will never be in someone else’s hands.

Lastly, don’t drink and drive. Police will be out in full force protecting our roadways and drivers, and, regardless, mixing alcohol and driving puts everyone on the road at risk.
