Adam Grote, a 22-year-old University of Texas senior studying architecture was killed last Sunday, November 6th, 2011 after a vehicle struck him while walking along the IH-35 access road near East Riverside Drive.

Jose Genaro Bernal, who was driving a white Chevrolet Malibu, struck Grote at 3am Sunday morning. Witnesses, who were able to acquire Bernal’s license plate number, recalled the Malibu fleeing from the scene after the crash. Two hours later, after Bernal was nearly 17 miles away from the scene of the crash, he met with a police officer to inform him of his involvement in the incident.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, Bernal was arrested and charged with failure to stop and render aid. According to a detective Bernal spoke with, he cited fear as the reason he fled the scene without coming to the aid of Grote.
