Why Shouldn’t I Deal with Insurance Companies on My Own?

Last updated on: July 19, 2013

Insurance companies are in the business of making money. There are two tactics they use to deny and delay all potential claims. What they do right away is get medical authorizations from you so they can look into your background for 15 years back or more and then tell you that some back injury that you had years ago is the reason that you’re hurting now. They want a statement from you about the wreck and then twist your words around to use them against you later. They want to see if they can get you to settle both cases at once – property damage and your personal injury claim. They also want to control the flow of information. They issue arbitrary deadlines that are not in your policy or required by law in the hopes that you will give them the information that they want. I always compare it to a baseball game where they know the rules of the game because they’ve been playing a long time, and clients no matter how smart or sophisticated they are, haven’t played the game at all. Without the knowledge of how this game works, you are at a disadvantage to say the least. Hiring an attorney prevents them from contacting you directly and the attorney who knows the rules of the game can make sure you control the flow of information and use your own leverage.
