Burns are often caused by the irresponsibility or negligence of others and can be inflicted by electricity, chemicals, sunburn, friction, even heat and cold. Serious burns can cause great physical and emotional pain, particularly those that cover large areas of the body, and often result in death. Fortunately, survival outcomes have remarkably improved since the advent of treating the patient in a specialized burn unit instead of a traditional hospital.
If you have been seriously burned, you will need to be hospitalized and will likely need surgery and/or skin grafts. These are very serious injuries that often result in psychological damage in addition to the physical pain: counseling may be needed to overcome the trauma of the event, and to overcome the shame and embarrassment that can often accompany physical disfigurement.
Types of Burns
- First-degree burns – usually limited to redness, a white plaque and minor pain at the burn site. These burns usually extend only into the top layers of the skin called the epidermis.
- Second-degree burns – often fill with clear fluid, have superficial blistering, and can cause more pain depending upon the level of nerve involvement in the area of the burn. A second-degree burn often involves the superficial dermis but may also involve the deep dermis layer.
- Third-degree burns – charring of the skin is present with a hard, leather-like scabby appearance. There is often a purple fluid seeping from the burn area and they are often painless due to the destruction of the nerve endings.
- Fourth-degree burns – encompass injury to the tissue underlying the skin, such as the muscles and bones. These burns include a secondary category with three additional degrees: fourth-degree burns that result in skin being irretrievably lost; fifth-degree burns resulting in muscle being irretrievably lost, and sixth-degree burns resulting in charring of the bone.
- Partial thickness burns – there is a newer classification of burns known as superficial thickness and partial thickness burns. These burns are divided into superficial and deep categories with the label of full thickness burns indicating damage to the epidermis, the dermis and the subcutaneous layers of skin.
