Drowning Accidents in Midland
Did you know that ten people die every day from unintentional drowning? Twenty percent of all unintentional drowning involve children who are 14 and under. For every child that dies another five require emergency care for non-fatal injuries, and more than half of these children require hospitalization. Surviving victims often suffer severe brain damage in addition to long-term disabilities such as memory problems, learning disabilities, and permanent loss of basic functioning leading to a permanent vegetative state.
There are a number of causes that lead to unintentional drowning, but several factors can increase the risk of drowning including the following:
- The inability to swim
- Failure to supervise water access
- A lack of barriers to prevent access
- The location of the water feature
- The failure to wear life jackets
- Alcohol and drug use
- Seizure disorders
Who is Most at Risk? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), males account for 78% of all fatal unintentional drowning in the United States, and 26% of all victims are children age 1-4. In fact, drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children fourteen and under. African Americans are also more at risk of unintentional drowning rate. In fact, African American children age 5-14 have a 3.2 times higher rate for drowning than other races. American Indians are also at increased risk. Factors, such as access to swimming pools, along with the lack of available water-related activities for recreation can contribute to less participation in these types of activities. This lack of access and participation in water-related activities can often contribute to weaker swimming skills.
Minimizing the Danger for Unintentional Drowning

- Teach your children how to swim
