If you’re represented when you receive a settlement check for a motor vehicle accident, the settlement check is usually going to be made out to both you and your attorney jointly. When the check comes to your attorney’s law firm, they will ask you to sign what’s called a Power of Attorney which allows them to deposit the check and cut two new checks. One issued under your name and one on the name of the firm for the amount of the fee they charge on the case.
