Millions of people are affected by a burn injury each year, a truly horrible injury which can cause disfigurement, debilitation, and even death. Burn injury law is actually a specialized and complicated area of the law due to the different types and severities of burns and different characteristics of the victims. At Zinda Law Group, we can help you evaluate the characteristics of your burn injury and help you receive the compensation you are entitled due to that burn injury.
Types of Burns
Burns can be caused by many types of accidents. The type affects the severity, which all factors in to determining compensation you may be owed. The different types of burns are thermal burns, electrical burns, chemical burns, inhalation burns, and radiation burns.

This is the type of burn most people think of when they hear about a burn injury because it involves the direct application of heat. These burns are caused by direct fire or open flame, but also by explosions such as from improperly stored flammable liquids or fireworks, steam, hot objects made of metal, or liquids such as oil or water.

Electrical burns are caused by anything that conducts electricity through the body. Electrical burn injuries may do more internal damage than external, and the skin may only be affected at the entry and exit spots.

Inhalation burns result from damage to the airway or lungs, and can permanently limit a person’s mobility and reduce quality of life. Inhalation of paint aerosols, chemicals, steam, and other agents can cause inhalation burns, whether immediately or over time.
Radiation Burns
Sunburn is the most common type of radiation burn, and other types include with radiation from tanning beds, sunlamps, exposure to nuclear fallout, microwaves, x-rays, fluoroscopy, chemotherapy, or other radiation treatment for cancer. These types of burns may have a delayed effect, and can be hard to detect at first or prove which source caused the burn. An experienced Georgetown burn injury lawyer at Zinda Law Group may be able to help you understand the strength of your claim regarding these rare and strange burns.
Severity
Medical science has classified burns by how deeply they penetrate into our skin and tissue: major, moderate, and minor. However, in determining where the burn falls in the familiar schema of third degree, second degree, or first degree burns, medical practitioners also take into account the age of the patient and how much of the body the burn covers.
However, in general, first degree burns typically only affect the top layer of skin, known as the epidermis. Blistering may or may not occur, and the patient typically does not require hospitalization. The next layer of skin, known as the dermis, is damaged in a second degree burn. The epidermis typically blisters and part or all of it may slough off. Depending on how much of the body is affected, hospitalization may or may not be required. In a third degree burn, the burn penetrates both the epidermis and the dermis into the subcutaneous tissue, resulting in death of the epidermis and dermis, and possibly some of the subcutaneous tissue. These burn injuries require hospitalization immediately, special treatment for recovery, and may result in death.
It is important to know that different types of burns as well as how deeply those burns penetrate contribute to the severity of the burn, complicating the issue. For example, a third degree inhalation burn may reduce air capacity for life, while a second degree thermal burn may leave no lasting damage. At Zinda Law Group, we can help you understand the factors a court will consider in your injury, and fight for any amount to which you may be entitled.
