Types of Recovery after a Personal Injury

If you've been injured and you have a personal injury case, one of the things that we want to look at is what sorts of damages you have suffered. Most people are pretty familiar with lost wages and past medical bills but there's a full range of damages that the jury can consider. Those are, of course, your past medical bills but also your future medical needs. Are you going to need long-term care or additional surgeries? Then there's not just your lost income but your loss of earning capacity in to the future. Obviously if you had a serious injury and you have a physical labouring sort of job, you may not have full use of an arm or a leg anymore. That's going to limit your ability to work into the future. It may mean changing jobs or just modifying the job that you have but that can often affect your income. Then there's the emotional trauma that someone experiences in a car accident. Immediately and going forward, some of that trauma can be completed by the time we get to trial, but it may go on into the future and for the rest of your life. Then there's the pain and suffering that you experienced from your injuries. There's obviously pain associated in most cases with an injury right after a car accident but that pain could go on for some time and may go on into the future. A lot of people do suffer disfigurement as well. Scarring from the car accident or surgery. And then impairment; that can be limitations on things that you can't do that completely prevent you from doing them or it can be things that you're still able to do but with some accommodations or modifications.
