Stryker in Hot Water Again Over Defective Products
Stryker Corporation, one of the world’s largest medical device providers, has issued recalls for several of its joint replacement products in recent years. Several models of hip replacements have been found to cause illness and complications for patients. Namely, the Accolade V40 femoral head, Rejuvenate Modular, and ABG II Modular-Neck Hip Stems. If you have suffered complications from a defective hip replacement, you could be entitled to compensation. Call our hip replacement injury attorneys today to get answers and a free consultation.
LFIT V40 Femoral Head Recall
The most recent product under recall is the LFIT Anatomic CoCr V40 femoral head used in the Stryker Accolade. The recall is Stryker’s third on an artificial hip product in the past five years and only applies to LFIT V40 models made before 2012. The issue with the LFIT V40 lies with taper locks that are failing at an alarming rate. The taper locks are susceptible to premature wear and corrosion. This corrosion causes bits of toxic metals to release into the patient’s tissue and bloodstream which can lead to severe inflammation, pain, mobility issues, broken bones, metal poisoning, necrosis, and more.
Rejuvenate and ABG II Hip Module Recall
In 2012, Stryker voluntarily recalled two of its hip replacement products, the Rejuvenate Modular and the ABG II Modular-Neck Hip Stems, because of issues also related to corrosion and the release of metallic debris in patients’ bodies. Stryker eventually agreed to pay out a $1.43-billion settlement to thousands of patients who were affected by the defective products. Despite the settlement, lawyers are still examining cases involving the Rejuvenate and ABG II for future litigation.
