Xarelto (rivaroxaban) was released in 2011 by the drug makers Bayer Healthcare and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary. This anticoagulant or blood thinner was marketed as a superior alternative to the decades old drug Warfarin.
Bayer and Janssen engaged in an aggressive marketing campaign to encourage doctors to prescribe this expensive drug. Within a short time frame, however, alarming evidence emerged as to the drug’s dangerous propensities. The use of Xarelto was associated with 2,081 serious adverse events, including at least 151 deaths back in 2012.
Despite mounting evidence as to the drug’s dangerous nature, drug makers refuse to recall the drug and have not updated their warnings, leaving doctors, patients, and the medical community in the dark as to the drug’s dangers.
Xarelto Side Effects
Excessive bleeding or hemorrhaging can be fatal in patients. With older classes of blood thinners, including popular drug Warfarin, an antidote agent was available to reverse excessive bleeding. However, there is no known, effective antidote available for Xarelto.
Accordingly, when a patient experienced unexpected bleeding, it virtually cannot be stopped. Patients using Xarelto are therefore left vulnerable to irreversible hemorrhaging, which can be fatal.
The side effects of using Xarelto or rivaroxaban include:
- Excessive bleeding
- Frequent nosebleeds
- Coughing up blood or blood clots
- Black or red stools
- Unexplained bruises or bruises that increase in size
- Bleeding from the gums
- Excessive menstruation
- Vomiting blood
- Brown or pink urine
- Death
