The mesothelium is a lining which covers and protects the internal organs of the human body. Mesothelioma is a deadly form of cancer that develops in the cells of the mesothelium, most often from exposure to asbestos. Because asbestos is most often inhaled or swallowed as its small particles pass through the air, most mesothelioma occurs in the pleural sac which lines the lungs, but it can be found in other parts of the body as well, including the lining of the stomach.
Symptoms of the disease include shortness of breath, chronic cough, blood in the lung fluid, chest pain and unexplained weight loss. This symptomology can mimic other non-lethal medical conditions, and misdiagnosis can occur. When this array of symptomology arises in a person who has worked in an area where asbestos is present, both a doctor and a lawyer should be consulted immediately. Working with asbestos is the most prominent risk factor in the contraction of the disease.

Available 24 / 7|Free ConsultationDespite medical treatments which include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, the prognosis for a person contracting this disease is often poor. It is an aggressive and deadly cancer. In addition, the latency period between exposure to asbestos and symptomology, can be quite long, as long as 20 to 50 years or more.
The link between asbestos exposure and mesothelioma is clear both from a medical and legal standpoint. However, because the latency period is so long, it is imperative that a person with this disease seek an attorney’s aid in making a claim for injures.

Available 24 / 7|Free ConsultationIt is estimated that the number of cases and claims in the United States may well continue to increase, as first responders and workers at disaster sites often continue to be exposed to asbestos. Most buildings constructed before 1980 still contain this toxic substance. Other common industries linked to asbestos exposure include construction, shipbuilding, insulation, chemical plant work and manufacturing, and others.
