Texas Defective Drug Attorneys Discuss Xarelto

The maker of the drug Xarelto is being sued across the country by individuals who have experienced severe internal bleeding, resulting in serious permanent injuries and death. The allegations in the Xarelto litigation is that the manufacturer knew of the potential side effects of the drug but failed to inform the United States government, the medical community, or patients of these potentially fatal and irreversible side effects.

What is the Prescription Drug Xarelto?

Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is a prescription anticoagulant or blood thinner drug manufactured by Bayer to prevent blood clots and treat those patients who could develop deep vein thrombosis or DVT.  The drug generally marketed as an alternative to popular blood thinner Warfarin.  Specifically, it is generally prescribed for those who have undergone serious surgeries, such as hip replacement.

Xarelto is one of a three newer medications developed to replace Warfarin, which uses rodenticide to treat blood clotting disorders and has been around since the 1950’s.  The purported advantage of Xarelto and its like medications, dabigatran and apixaban, is that it requires less patient monitoring and there are fewer drug and food interactions.

Who Manufactures Xarelto?

Xarelto is the product of industry giant Bayer A.G.  This German based pharmaceutical company is best known for its product aspirin, which was developed back in the 19th century.  The marketing of Xarelto is handled by Janssen Pharmaceutica, a division of Johnson & Johnson.  Both of these companies have been involved in litigation concerning the safety of their drugs.

Bayer has received a warning from the Food and Drug Administration concerning its popular contraceptive Yaz.  Yaz must now come with warnings as to the increased risk of blood clotting that accompanies use of the product.  Janssen is currently involved in investigations over potential bribery and marketing of the drug Risperdal for off-label purposes.

What Side Effects Are Associated with Xarelto?

The most severe side effect associated with the use of Xarelto is fatal hemorrhaging or internal bleeding.  When a patient on Xarelto starts to bleed, from even a minor injury such as a bump on the head, there is virtually no way to stop the bleeding.

The reason for this reaction stems from the drug’s mechanism.  Coagulation of the blood is dependent on the action of Vitamin K, which is naturally found in leafy greens and other vegetables.  Vitamin K leads to the production of clotting agent thrombin.

The drug Warfarin disables Vitamin K to avoid clots, which means that in the event of a bleed, Vitamin K can be administered in high doses to stop it.  Xarelto, on the other hand, prevents the production of Vitamin K whatsoever.  Accordingly, once a patient starts to bleed, there is virtually no way to stop it.

Other dangerous side effects include arrhythmia, diarrhea, tachycardia, and sudden changes in blood pressure.  Though not always life-threatening, each of these conditions can be serious if the patient is not promptly treated by a competent medical provider.
